UVFR Message From the Chief

FROM THE CHIEF

Welcome to our website. Its hard to believe that we are moving into our fifth year of the merger between the East McKeesport VFC #2 and the Wall Borough VFD. Without much fanfare, we have dramatically improved not only our inventory and service capabilities, but also our training. New rescue tools-a Holmatro combi-tool, airbags, and assorted hand tools, are now in service on board Rescue 135. The more modern Truck 287 is poised and ready, loaded with equipment that we could have only dreamed of five years ago. This is the result of the hard work of our members past and present, with the help of the two Borough Councils, and the Federal and State grants that we have been able to secure. We've enhanced our capability to provide top notch fire, rescue, EMS, and public service to the communities of Wall and East McKeesport, and when called upon, to our neighbors...but we are not done growing yet. Browse through our site and see what we are proud of. Also know that we are welcoming new members all the time. If you are interested in growing with us, whether its an interest in firefighting, EMS, rescue, or administration and fund-raising, there's probably a place for you.

Check it out!

Steve Zamosky, Chief of Department
United Vol. Fire/Rescue

REPORTED COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE FIRE
Sunday, June 22, 2008
-
UVFR stations 287 and 135 were dispatched along with Eastern Area Prehospital Services, Wilmerding Station 306 and Pitcairn Station 230 RIT for the report of smoke coming from a commercial structure-the Wall VFW on Division Street. East McKeesport PD had been dispatched to a reported motion alarm and arrived to find smoke coming from a vent and an exterior door. R135 and T287 crews made entry while E 306-1 secured a water supply. Because of the size, age, and condition of the building a second alarm was activated bringing stations 193, 213, and 229 along with station 113 for an air unit. Crews found a smoldering trash can fire behind the bar area, which was quickly extinguised with a water can. Second alarm units were cancelled prior to arriving on scene. Crews remained on scene checking for extension. The Allegheny County Fire Marshall is investigating. Units responding: T 287, R 135, E 306-1, RIT 230, EAPS, E. McK PD, ACFM Second alarm stations: 193, 213, 229, 113 Command: United Chief (Zamosky)

Saturday, June 14, 2008

After a very long wait, members received their first look at what will become the new Squad 135. The unit is a 2008 Dodge 4500 quad cab, with 6.7 litre Cummins turbo diesel motor, automatic 4x4 transmission, and massive payload capacity. Very soon it will be fitted with a Reading (tm) utility box to complete the package. This unit will replace the former Engine 135-1 (1979 Ford/Pierce) and Squad 135 (1991 Chevy Suburban 1500).

UVFR TRAINING NIGHT-MAN OVER THE HILL

UVFR's weekly training was a scenario where a young man (one of our new juniors)was injured and required a 'physical rescue' to be treated. Members rigged two members to go over the hill to treat the victim, then two more assisted with packaging. Meanwhile, the crew above rigged a physical advantage system for removal. Crews worked for approximately one hour.
